Freeland Hall

By Langley Chamber of Commerce / October 25, 2024 / Comments Off on Freeland Hall
Nestled at the head of Holmes Harbor on South Whidbey, Freeland Hall has been a cherished venue for a wide range of gatherings since 1915. Whether you’re planning a wedding, a family reunion, a corporate retreat, or a special celebration, Freeland Hall provides the perfect backdrop for your unforgettable moments. Located in Freeland with views of Holmes Harbor, Freeland Hall is ideal for presentations, lectures, and banquets. The 2,400-square-foot historic building offers an event space that includes an upper room for up to 250 guests and includes a stage, projector screen, microphone, a deck with automatic awnings, and a catering kitchen. The lower room accommodates up to 100 guests. Both spaces have WiFi, and the hall is surrounded by Freeland Park. If outdoor event space is of interest, event planners can coordinate with the park. The history of Freeland Hall reflects the enduring spirit of community and the evolution of a cherished gathering place on South Whidbey. The site that would become Freeland was platted in the 1800s by real estate promoters. Initially known as St. Louis, the area failed to develop into a town. It briefly took on the name Newell, named after the nearest post office at the time. In 1899, a trio of Seattle visionaries—Henry L. Stevens, George Washington Daniels, and Henry A. White—formed The Free Land Association with a visionary goal in mind: to create a utopian society that embraced communal, socialistic ideals. They laid the foundation for Freeland by platting the area into five-acre lots and officially incorporated it on January 12, 1900. The founders of Freeland aspired to create a community where all residents worked for the common good. However, this grand vision of a socialist utopia did not come to fruition, and the Free Land Association declared bankruptcy in 1920. The idea of constructing a community hall, which came to be known as Freeland Hall, emerged in August 1914. The Freeland Improvement Club spearheaded the project. The hall was built with volunteer labor and was completed sometime after the spring of 1915. Generations have come together to celebrate life’s milestones and create lasting memories at Freeland Hall. The beloved local annual Mr. South Whidbey Pagent, hosted by Friends of Friends Medical Fund, is held at the Freeland Hall. Its always entertaining!… Read More

Home on Whidbey A community Land Trust

By Langley Chamber of Commerce / October 23, 2024 / Comments Off on Home on Whidbey A community Land Trust
As a non-profit 501(c)3 registered Community Land Trust, our organization’s mission is to enable permanently affordable homes and thriving community on Whidbey Island. As land and building costs have increased across the board, it becomes virtually impossible for the real estate market to provide attainable home solutions at market prices. That, combined with the limits to growth on our island, we simply cannot design or build our way into affordability. We see the Community Housing Land Trust model as an innovative way to create permanently affordable homes that are so desperately needed to maintain the viability and vitality of the Whidbey Island community. We do this by decommodifying real estate and offering homeownership and rental opportunities to qualifying local residents and families. The model combines both public and private funds with philanthropic donations in order to purchase or develop property. The underlying land is then held in the commons rather than private ownership. For homeowners and renters, this means that the entry price of a home is a fraction of what it would be for a market-priced home. With the home no longer a real estate commodity subject to the increase in inflation and appreciation, permanent affordability is preserved for all future owners and residents.… Read More

South Whidbey Children’s Center

By Langley Chamber of Commerce / May 14, 2024 / Comments Off on South Whidbey Children’s Center
South Whidbey Children’s Center’s educational philosophy supports the social, emotional and cognitive development of each child through the HighScope curriculum. This curriculum was specifically chosen as it is child centered, emergent, and research validated. HighScope’s approach to education is a unique process that has been tested and researched for over 40 years. Young children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical capacities develop quickly when they can use materials and their imaginations freely in an environment that promotes investigation, decision making, cooperation, persistence, and problem solving. The capacities that children develop in this open framework are broad abilities that children can, and do, use daily in the classroom as well as at home. The South Whidbey Children’s Center was originally founded in 1978 by a small group of families in need of preschool and childcare. SWCC’s philosophy is to nurture, support, and empower the whole child and to help them grow deep roots that will serve them throughout their education and life. They believe this approach helps to foster self-confidence, curiosity and compassion in your child during this vital stage of life. They also believe that, in order to provide families with the best possible early childhood learning experience, they must work intentionally to create a diverse and equitable environment. As such, it is crucial to their child-centered learning philosophy that they remain committed to improving the wages, benefits, and professional status of theur teachers, as well as making their Center accessible to a wide variety of family income levels. SWCC teaches preschool and has childcare for children ages 12 months through 5 years. They also have a before and after school program for children ages 5 through 12 years old. The South Whidbey Children’s Center is the only NAEYC accredited and Early Achievers participating preschool on South Whidbey.… Read More

South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District

By Langley Chamber of Commerce / May 14, 2024 / Comments Off on South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District
The South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District started in 1983. Bud and Margaret Waterman donated 40 acres to the District on a site next to South Whidbey High School that is now known as Community Park. In 1987, a levy was passed to begin developing and maintaining the District land. In 1999, the District purchased approximately 40 acres of land adjacent to the Park, which has been kept natural with trails running throughout the acreage. With bond proceeds in 2000, the District purchased acreage of land east of the Park which has since been converted into a sports complex with soccer fields, open space and a forested area. Since its inception, the District has built four baseball fields, additional soccer fields, an administrative building, playground, a skate park, restrooms, and trails which wind through Community Park. The District now maintains South Whidbey Community Park, South Whidbey Sports Complex, Trustland Trails Park, Maxwelton Trails Park, Deer Lake, Goss Lake, and Lone Lake. Plans are underway for the new South Whidbey Aquatics Center, coming in 2025, located at at the entrance to the Community Park, on Maxwelton Road in Langley. Some amenities include a community pool, swim teams, hot tub, sauna; a teaching pool with lazy river for aquatic fitness, swim lessons, physical therapy, water walking, and family fun. The goal is to iImprove community health, promote water safety, and ensure accessibility for all. Activities are available for both children and adults. Check out the Programs and Events on their website or pickup a copy of the Activity Guide at all South Whidbey Post Offices, Libraries, Chambers of Commerce, or the Park District office. The Whidbey Island Triathalon is hosted by SWPR each July. It’s a great first triathlon and a fun event for veteran triathletes. This scenic course starts with a 0.5 mile swim in beautiful Goss Lake. Leaving the lake, you’ll begin the 19 mile bike ride on paved country roads. The bike course is hilly with views of Saratoga Passage and the North Cascades. South Whidbey Schools Foundation

By Langley Chamber of Commerce / May 27, 2024 / Comments Off on South Whidbey Schools Foundation
The South Whidbey Schools Foundation builds relationships between our community and schools to invest in learning experiences that inspire students in our ever-changing world. It is the GOAL of the South Whidbey Schools Foundation to provide funding for projects outside the scope of the school district budget which foster educational excellence and innovative process for the benefit of students in the South Whidbey School District. A group of concerned citizens realized an additional source of funding was necessary to encourage staff and students to extend the reach for excellence beyond the usual classroom experience. The Foundation was formed in 1995 to support this vision. The Foundation is a registered non-profit organization in the state of Washington. Normal school funding includes the daily operation of the schools, from buildings to salaries and required curriculum. The South Whidbey Schools Foundation does not supplement this funding; instead, we fund innovative learning opportunities outside these regular school operations. Dollars come to the South Whidbey Schools Foundation either restricted or unrestricted. The restricted dollars support the program designated by the donor. The unrestricted contributions help support programs such as Classroom Grants. The Foundation has disbursed more than $300,000 to fund innovative projects and experiments to encourage educational excellence and increase student learning and participation in a variety of key areas.… Read More

Spoiled Dog Winery

By Langley Chamber of Commerce / May 14, 2024 / Comments Off on Spoiled Dog Winery

Spoiled Dog Winery has been making wine on Whidbey since 2015. Their grapes are sourced from some of the best vineyards in Washington and Oregon and the wine is handcrafted with meticulous focus on balance. The Krug family wants visitors to feel like they’ve discovered a secret spot that will become a destination and a reason to regularly return to Whidbey Island for a visit. From the moment you enter the tasting room among the barrels of aging wine you realize you have discovered a special destination.

The relationship between food and wine is something that transforms wine tasting at Spoiled Dog Winery into a culinary experience. Wine tastings include an offering of Pinot Noir with chocolate and a nibble of crackers with a savory cheese made using their wine.

If you love to cook, you’ll find a hidden jewel waiting for you at Spoiled Dog Winery. They produce lavender infused Verjus from their estate Pinot Noir grapes. This special ingredient that gained popularity during the Renaissance will add a delightful flavor to your next salad dressing or sauce.

Spoiled Dog participates in several annual food and wine events and their special winemaker dinners hosted under the eaves of their apple trees overlooking the lower vineyard are not to be missed.

Whether you are a local or a visitor, Spoiled Dog Winery will become a regular destination to “wine down” and experience the joie de vivre of Whidbey Island.

Extraordinary Pinot Noir from the heart of Puget Sound. Come visit Spoiled Dog Winery and enjoy our fine wines and vineyard. You will likely be greeted by Blue and Sami, our Australian Shepherds. We’re located just 1/4 mile south of Highway 525 on Maxwelton Road.… Read More

There’s a community atmosphere showcasing a variety of craft beer, cider selections on draft, in cans, wine by the glass, craft brewed soda, craft non-alcoholic beer, specialty craft brews in bottles available from their cellar, and growler filling available.

The Taproom is located in Langley at the historic Bayview Cash Store which has been a community hub for over 100 years and surrounded by other small businesses fostered by Goosefoot. The Cash Store is rich in history and beautifully crafted, there wasn’t a bar in the area since the 1940’s and the Taproom opened its doors in June of 2014 to a welcoming crowd of locals, thirsty for good craft beer!

Although it started with the original owners, Damien and Tiffany slinging beer, the Taproom staff and business continued to grow and the business was sold to long-time employee Francesca in the Fall of 2022.

Whenever possible the Taproom works with local farms like the Organic Farm School, Fulla Farm and Foggy Hill Farm among others to support Whidbey growers and inspire their menu. The Blue Peony

By Betty Freeman / December 20, 2024 / Comments Off on The Blue Peony
The Blue Peony strives to bring art into the kitchen and into everyday lives by creating fabulous aprons and accessories that bring color and pattern into every unexpected spot. We are inspired by our love of travel, colorful dreams, and the unique people you meet everyday. I created our organic line based on the belief that we need to be more responsible for the health and happiness of ourselves, our family, our society and our planet. We strive to make high-quality, organic and natural fiber products accessible to everyone. We believe that taking small steps in your life can lead to exponential returns. The Blue Peony was chosen for the name of the shop because I have fond memories of sewing with my mother and looking out the windows at all of the fabulous peonies. Blue is said to inspire creativity – which is what we’re all about! My mother gave me my first sewing machine, a vintage singer, when I was 12 years old and I was hooked. Today I am a quirky, stylish, and some-what eclectic thirty-something with a wonderful husband and a 8 year old son. I love Fleetwood Mac, taking a tea break at 3 everyday, finding amateur art to hang on my walls and collecting vintage mismatched plates from thrift stores. I started The Blue Peony about 13 years ago and I have been sewing and creating my dream every day since. Our retail store is located at 107b First Street in Downtown Langley, WA. Our current winter hours are: Thursday / Friday / Saturday 11-4pm and Closed Sunday and By Chance: Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday. If you can’t make it to our shop we are open for shopping at www.thebluepeony.com with both shipping and local pick-up options. Whidbey Island Dance Theatre

By Langley Chamber of Commerce / May 14, 2024 / Comments Off on Whidbey Island Dance Theatre
Whidbey Island Dance Theatre (WIDT) was founded in 1993 with a love for dance and the idea of creating a new and exciting opportunity for young people in the community to find their place on stage with their peers. As the company moved forward and found its legs, it provided real, pre-professional dance experience to outstanding young dancers. Its participation in the wider world of dance followed. The juried, national association of ballet companies, “Regional Dance America,” chose WIDT as an RDA performing company from 2001-2012. Since 2000, WIDT has performed throughout Washington, as well as in Arizona, California, Utah, Oregon, at the National Dance Festival in Pittsburgh, PA, and in Montreal, Canada. Through the years, both professional and community choreographers have expressed their appreciation for the generations of talented dancers they’ve worked with at WIDT. Each year, WIDT graces the stage with two major productions, “The Nutcracker” and “A Celebration of Dance,” its springtime choreography showcase. Both highlight the diverse talents of its broadly trained dancers and feature the works of both resident and guest choreographers. These productions are a gift, 28 years of WIDT making the creative, athletic, joyful and fun-to-watch magic that is dance! The company’s main performance venues are South Whidbey High School Auditorium, a 400-seat theater, and Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, which holds 250 seats. WIDT and Island Dance are located at 714 Camano Avenue in Langley. Office hours vary. Please call in advance to arrange a time or confirm when we are open at or email us.… Read More
