First Saturday Art Walk
November 4, 5-7 p.m.
Artworks Gallery‘s November Featured Artist is K. Madrone Moulton (assemblage above: Hope) who grew up in an artistic family and has been involved with the arts for most of her life. She has an insatiable curiosity about how things are made, and developed her skills in picture framing and matting. Combine those things with her love of unique treasures and beads, and beautiful shadow boxes are the result. She takes the materials that she has found from around the world and uses them to reflect the harmony and peace that she finds on Whidbey Island. Visit Artworks online store on our website. The store is filled with art for you to purchase online. Original paintings, photography, prints, cards, glass art, fiber art, jewelry, and woodworking. Our artists will manage the shipping of your order directly to you. Hours: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday-Monday (closed Tuesdays)
In November, Museo welcomes Whidbey artists Laura Hudson and Jean Whitesavage to the gallery. Both artists create from an intuitive place, patiently crafting their individual medium until an oft-elusive sense of balance is achieved.
In Laura Hudson’s first show at Museo, she debuts figurative paintings that playfully juggle universal dichotomies through pattern, color and mark-making. Laura’s work is exciting – dancing between representational and abstract, but also grounded in deeply relatable themes.
Longtime Museo artist Jean Whitesavage brings her versatile sculptures that balance the delicate, botanical form with the resilient medium of hand forged steel.

How Do We REALLY Walk Each Other Home
Saturday, November 4th, 9:30 a.m. – 12 noon
Following two nights of Walking Each Other Home,
the evening shows celebrating Elderhood, is a Saturday morning event,
tackling how we REALLY Walk Each Other Home.
This part of the series explores issues of aging in our community
and what our community response to those issues can be.
Aging is not for the faint-hearted. Good thing we’ve had a lifetime to learn not only coping but resilience skills. This community conversation will give you an opportunity to share both the challenges and the gifts of this time of life with others who are living it. We hope to build a community of people who can support each other during this third act of life.
Come at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and a resource fair in the lobby for Healing Circles, Island Senior Services, and South Whidbey at Home before and after the event.
All tickets $15 and no one will be turned away due to having a lack of funds.

Cythara V: The History of the World Through Guitar
Saturday, November 4th @ 7:30 p.m.
A loved tradition returns to Whidbey on November 4, Cythara 5, where guests will take a journey through the history of the world according to the guitar. Andre Feriante and Troy Chapman perform on their personal collection of musical instruments with their informal and lighthearted style.
Andre and Troy will sample the flavors of multicultural music with 30 instruments from 5 continents spanning more than 5,000 years. Cythara 4 is an entertaining and educational production, featuring the most popular instrument in the world, the guitar!
Cythara is an umbrella term for a range of stringed instruments of medieval and renaissance Europe.
This group included lyres and harps, but also early long necked instruments with pear shaped bodies. These did not exist in a vacuum, of course, and were likely influenced by the oud, lute, and more. Ultimately, instruments called cythara evolved into the violin, viola, and the guitar.

The Bard’s Boutique Artist Spotlight presents: Island Author Sarri Gilman Reading from “Cocoon”
Whidbey Island resident and psychotherapist Sarri Gilman, MA, MFT saw a dire need and did something about it. She created housing for homeless teens when she founded Cocoon House in Everett, Washington. Then she wrote a memoir about that experience. Join us upstairs in the Front Room Gallery at the Bayview Cash Store at 1:30 – 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 when the Bard’s Boutique presents Gilman reading from her memoir “Cocoon: How One Woman Created a Shelter for Teens and Found Hope Along the Way.”
It started when Gilman became acutely aware that many of the teenage students attending the Everett school where she worked had nowhere to go at night. She then realized they were victims of a devastating loophole in the state’s system, which provided housing for adults and young children who were homeless but had no space for teens.
What happened next was not in Gilman’s career plan, but the family therapist could not turn her back on the problem unfolding around her. Instead, she became the executive director of a nonprofit organization, Cocoon House, which served – and continues to serve – as a home for the most vulnerable teens in her workplace community, giving them the chance to find stability and a new lease on life. “Cocoon,” is her unbelievable and inspiring and true story.
Gilman will hold a book-signing after the reading and attendees will also be able to browse the Bard’s Boutique for extraordinary gift items by local artists.
This reading is a pay-what-you-will donation event to support the Island Shakespeare Festival (ISF). ISF, (www.islandshakespearefest.org), is also a pay-what-you-will season of classical theater which happens every summer in Langley from mid-July to early September.
The Bard’s Boutique in the Bayview Cash Store is located at 5603 Bayview Road in Langley.

Gertrude Stein and a Companion
November 24-December 3
@ Outcast Theater
A Staged Reading directed by Patricia Duff with Martha Murphy and Duff in the roles.
OutCast is pleased to welcome this gem of a play back to the Black Box stage. “Gertrude Stein and A Companion” was previously produced in OCP’s first full season in 2012. This staged reading will feature the original cast.
The play begins just after the death of Gertrude Stein. Her ghost returns to reveal her relationship with Alice B. Toklas and traces the extraordinary relationship between Stein, experimental author and collector of art and artists, and her lifelong friend, who remained devoted to her memory and the life they shared. It moves back and forth in time as the actors play not only Gertrude and Alice but a host of famous people who were part of their lives, including Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso. But without Alice, her true love, Gertrude would have remained undiscovered.

Good Cheer Seeking Volunteers for Child’s Chance to Give
Child’s Chance to Give enables children of families who shop in our food bank to find holiday gifts for their loved ones. Child’s Chance to Give will run on December 3 at the Good Cheer Clinton in Ken’s Korner. Each child will receive Good Cheer $Snowflake Bucks$ (approximately $20 value) that they can use to purchase gifts. In order to keep their holiday gifts a secret, parents and guardians wait in a separate area, sipping on hot chocolate and snacking on cookies. Before they leave, the kids get help wrapping their presents so they’re ready for holiday gifting.
We are looking for people to help make this experience possible. Volunteers are needed to welcome families, escort parents/guardians to their waiting area, help younger children shop, and wrap gifts. Past volunteers have described it as magical to see how much love children put in to selecting their gifts. To sign up to volunteer, email cathy@goodcheer.org.
If you would like to sponsor some $Snowflake Bucks$, donations can be made at either store, online, or by check mailed to Good Cheer, PO Box 144, Langley 98260. We also need supplies like wrapping paper, gift bags and tissue paper, tape, gift tags, ribbon, gift boxes, and children’s toys. If you have extras to share, please bring these items to the Donation Center at 2812 Grimm Road in Langley before November 25. The Donation Center is open 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday each week.
