First Saturday Art Walk
October 7, 5-7 p.m.
Artworks Gallery’s Featured Artist is Sarah Silverman-Pucci, a Seattle native who now lives in Oak Harbor. Sarah says she has always considered herself an artist even when not pursuing art as a career. As a kid, she spent hours drawing dinosaurs, dragons and cat people. Her subjects transitioned into mainly plants and animals as an adult. In 2021 she moved to Oak Harbor to be with her husband who is stationed at the Navy base. He is an avid gardener and has given Sarah plenty of subjects for one of her favorite art genres, botanical painting. Sarah has also completed several pieces featuring the ecosystems of the world. Her subjects include Puget Sound, the Arctic, the Amazon, and three African ecosystems.
Showing at Museo in October are Whidbey painters Michael Dickter and Robert Jessup. Both practiced artists bring the viewer on an immersive journey through their use of shape, color and textural layers. Michael’s latest body of work was made after a significant surgery and has grown out of the process of healing. His expressive paintings portray optimism through his lighter color palette and symbolic depiction of flora and fauna. Jessup’s large abstractions fill the gallery with color, light and line. These paintings are a continuation of Robert’s Whidbey series and play with the endless loop of question and answer through the organic language of brush strokes.
Join artist Michael Dickter on Sunday, October 22 at 1 p.m.at Museo for a talk and discussion regarding his new body of work and about art in general. Please RSVP on Facebook through the button below or email us at museo@whidbey.com so we can get a head count for seating. There will be light refreshments and lots of laughs provided!
Artist Talk with Michael Dickter
Sunday, October 22, 1-3 p.m. at Museo Gallery
Rob Schouten Gallery presents metalsmith Mary Ellen O’Connor who makes unique works in 24k gold on polished copper. Following her passion for animals, nature, and wildlife her works exude a calm elegance influenced by Asian design and esthetics. Applying the gold leaf design (a process of heat treating the copper) allows her to create iridescent color patterns, further enhancing the gold image. Joining her is painter Anna Mastronardi Novak with exciting new multi-layered colored pencil drawings depicting her native Italian landscapes and vistas, as well as imagery from around her home on Whidbey Island and the Northwest. Using a soft focus and often muted color palate her works are at once traditional in subject and contemporary and relatable. October Gallery Hours: Weekends 10 – 5, Weekdays 11 – 5, Tuesdays by appointment.
It’s time for the annual Crow Show at the Whidbey Art Gallery. Member artists have been creating all sorts of crow themed pieces and the show promises to be wonderful! The Hub Gallery Hosts Artist Diane Baxter
Diane Baxter has always been drawn to the simple but complex beauty of the natural world. Organic matter—clay, rocks, dirt, wax, branches—are materials she uses to bring the interior landscapes of her mind and heart to life. Many of her pieces also tell stories, whether her own or those belonging to all of us. Join the artist for a discussion in the Hub Gallery on Sunday, October 8 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Thoreau at Home | WICA Theatre Series
October 13th – 28th | 3 Fridays, 3 Saturdays, and 2 Sunday Matinees
Join us for Thoreau at Home, back by popular demand from our inaugural Whidbey Repertory Festival in March for a full theatre series run!
Written by poet and novelist David Wagoner, it takes us on an immersive, lyrical journey with the influential American naturalist Henry David Thoreau through the environment he grew to think of and care for as his home. Thoreau at Home is performed by Todd Jefferson Moore and directed by Richard E.T. White, with music and sound design by Peter Richards and stage management by Emily Grierson.
Working from Thoreau’s journals, David Wagoner has crafted a vivid portrait of encounters with birds, animals, plants, and weather among the remarkably varied landscapes around Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau believed that cities were saved, not by the good men in them, but by the forests and swamps around them. He recognized the dangers of an exclusively commercial America and tried to show in all his words and actions, in the whole flavor of his life, a richer alternative.
This play–so timely as we wrestle with the effect the human race has had on the natural world–shows us Thoreau shortly before his early death yet still active in mind and heart, planning the fullest life he could imagine, and finding wonderment in the smallest details of the landscape he called home. Following his path, we are invited to reconsider our own relationship to nature through his clear, informed vision.

Help Us Give Our Youngest on Whidbey a Lifetime Advantage
Help Us Reach Our Goal of Raising $15,000!
Imagine every child under age five on Whidbey Island having the opportunity to grow their own home library of high-quality books, igniting their love of reading and preparing them for success upon entering kindergarten. This dream is a reality for more than 1,000 young children on Whidbey, and you can play an important role in putting more books into the hands of our earliest learners.
Imagination Library of Whidbey Island—a local program partner of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, strives to send a new book every month to Whidbey Island children from birth to age five. Created in 1995 by renowned entertainer and philanthropist Dolly Parton, the Imagination Library has a proven track record of promoting positive home literacy environments and increasing vital early literacy skills. Early reading is critical for every child.
Since Dolly’s special visit to Washington last month, we have rapidly experienced significant growth in the number of children signed up to receive their free monthly book – a 25% increase across our state! Whidbey Island has already enrolled over 1,100 children since December 2022!
As the program surges in popularity and impacts an increasing number of children, more funds must be raised to keep the momentum.
It’s our promise, along with our legislative and program partners, to make sure every child under five experiences the magic of books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. While we are incredibly grateful for the $2 million secured during the last legislative session to fund 50% of the cost of books and mailing for all registered children, it simply is not enough to support the increasing number of young children enrolling in the Imagination Library.
Whidbey’s earliest learners need your help! The good news? A donation of just $30 guarantees monthly delivery of a carefully selected book to a young child for an entire year. How many children can you and/or your business or community organization sponsor?
Please consider a donation to the Imagination Library of Whidbey Island and help us get more books to little ones like Rylin, Eugene, and Liliana. Your support is needed now more than ever.
To sponsor a child today, visit: bit.ly/imaginationlibrarywhidbey
Community Care Corps (C3) awards $150,000 to Island Senior Resources (ISR)
Community Care Corps (C3) is pleased to announce the funding of 30 innovative local models nationwide, including “ISR CONNECTS-C3, helping family caregivers, older adults, and adults with disabilities, using volunteer nonmedical assistance to maintain independence in their homes. Community Care Corps, funded by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is a partnership of three national nonprofit organizations: The Oasis Institute, Caregiver Action Network, and USAging.
ISR CONNECTS-C3 will link participants with trained volunteer teams within communities across Whidbey Island to reduce social isolation and increase access to services. Imagine volunteers, IRS staff, neighbors, businesses, and organizations all coming together to provide social engagement opportunities and resources to seniors and disabled adults at their doorsteps and in their neighborhoods. Imagine volunteer teams facilitating neighbors coming together to share meals, visit a local art gallery, take a walk, celebrate a birthday, or enjoy a sunset. Imagine those same teams responding to the needs of participants by connecting them to local resources and professional services. Imagine together, we can address the challenges and share the joys of aging.
The success of ISR CONNECTS-C3 will be amplified with the participation of our entire community. We need 60-75 volunteers who love being socially active and around people of all ages and backgrounds. We need businesses who might offer discounts to our clients to share a cup of coffee or a meal with new friends. We need community organizations to share their social activities or educational opportunities with our teams. We need neighbors who might lend a hand to a yard cleanup or invite their older neighbors to a BBQ. Most importantly, we need 1,000 participants (self-identified or referred) who would benefit from and enjoy the personal engagement that ISR CONNECTS-C3 will offer.
Whidbey Raises Over $109,000 for Essential Needs Program
Together with many generous members of the community, the Goosefoot Community Fund and the Whidbey Community Foundation (WCF) partnered for a third year to raise funds for the Essential Needs Program – that supports our Island neighbors through challenging times. This year we raised over $109,000!
“The fact that surpassed our goal again this year makes me think that generosity must be in everyone’s DNA in our remarkable community. It’s astonishing how much people give — over and over — to ensure our neighbors get the support they need when they need it. Yes, even 27 cents can truly make a difference when so many others pitch in too.”
– Elise Miller, Goosefoot Community Fund, Executive Director
Whether you donated directly, rounded up at The Goose Grocer, or helped spread the word – we thank you for making the 3rd Annual Fundraiser for the Essential Needs Program so successful. Your donations help fill temporary financial gaps that aren’t met through existing funding streams, and are administered by the Opportunity Council – Island County Service Center. Together we have helped over 300 households, most of whom earn less than 30% of the median income in Island County. For the local Whidbey households that receive this support, a small amount can make or break whether they can continue to contribute to, participate in and enrich our community. We all benefit when essential needs are met.
Starting in May 2023, the Whidbey Island Fundraiser for the Essential Needs Program was seeded with $50,000 ($25,000 each from Goosefoot and WCF) with a collective goal of $100,000. The Goose Community Grocer again designated the Essential Needs Program as their Roundup for Charity recipient from May through July and alone raised over $29,000. The Goose team exceeded their previous year total by $3,000 and had their single biggest month in Roundup history. Because of these generous donations and our community partnerships, the fundraiser met and surpassed its goal with a final total of $109,168. Thank you, Whidbey!
Goosefoot and WCF are extremely grateful for the community support. They extend their gratitude to the Opportunity Council for their dedication to helping our community members directly. And they also extend a huge thank you to the entire team at The Goose Community Grocer for their enthusiastic support of this important cause and for their Roundup for Charity Program, benefiting many different local organizations.

City of Langley Announces Lodging Tax Fund Grant Opportunity
City of Langley Lodging Tax Funds Applications for 2024 Funding
(Application Deadline October 9, 2023 4:30 PM).
Applications available on the City of Langley website atwww.langleywa.org/
The tourism industry is a significant driver for our local economy and an important source of revenue to help fund City operations. More importantly, however, the types of tourism that are promoted can significantly impact the quality of life for Langley residents.
The City of Langley is very excited about the new direction tourism is taking regionally, from a conventional model that mostly focuses on maximizing revenue, to “Regenerative” or “Transformational” tourism that leaves both the tourists and the people in the communities they visit with opportunities to learn, heal, help improve environmental and social conditions, build community, and contribute to other positive impacts. Langley can be on the forefront of redefining “tourism.”
The annual City of Langley Lodging Tax REIMBURSEMENT Grant Program is funded through a tax that was created by the lodging industry statewide that is charged on overnight accommodations in the City of Langley. These grants can only be used to support tourism activities and facilities in the City, in accordance with state law. This competitive grant program is administered through the City of Langley.
Calling Local Artists, Artisans, and Creative Souls!
Island Senior Resources (ISR) has an excess of aluminum walkers in its Medical Equipment Lending Libraries that serve an essential function, but folks consider them unattractive and not as functional as they could be.
We have an idea to change that with your help! “WALKER ART!”
Let’s turn walkers into functional pieces of artwork, stage them in public buildings around Island County, and then auction them off to support our programs!
Would you like to contribute your time and materials to turn a walker into a piece of art before Thanksgiving?
Each piece of WALKER ART must remain safe, usable, collapsible, and the decoration long-lasting.
Simple and colorful decorations are fine.
You may add a decorative carryall to the front or side crossbar if it doesn’t disrupt function, as our clients often ask for these.
We will promote each piece with the artist’s name and bio unless you want to remain anonymous. All auction proceeds will support ISR’s programs for seniors, with the sold value recorded as an in-kind donation from you.
If you are inspired and interested, email michele@islandseniorservices.org before September 30. We need at least six pieces of WALKER ART to proceed (we have at least 20 walkers). We will let you know when we have enough artists willing to help. The aluminum walkers will then be available for pickup in Bayview, Freeland, or Oak Harbor (or we can arrange to get them to you). The deadline for submission would be 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22.
Senior artists, artisans, and creative souls aged 55+ are strongly encouraged to consider volunteering their creativity. We can provide a 30% discount at Senior Thrift in Freeland for any WALKER ART supplies. If that’s of interest, please include that in your email, and we can arrange a coupon.
Please help us bring some joy to the aging process with beautiful WALKER ART! Island Senior Resources
