Langley Lights the Night at a block party/aerial light show, on July 6 on Cascade Avenue and Second Street, celebrating Independence Day weekend. There will be music, food, crafts, and an animated drone light show launching from the marina (thanks to Nichols Bros and the Port of South Whidbey) just after sunset. We are anticipating 2k-3k attendees and will be promoting the art walk as well.
You’re invited to be a part of the festivities! Chamber members and downtown merchants get first dibs at being a vendor. The Chamber is asking for a $175 booth fee to help cover costs we incur to put on and publicize an event of this scale. Because the Chamber’s mission is to promote and support our business members, we are asking businesses who don’t have capacity to be a vendor to consider extending their hours to capture the foot traffic generated by our event. We are happy to help advertise those extended hours!
As always, sponsorship on any level will help us raise the funding needed to put on the best event ever.
Let us know which option you think will best serve your business by emailing: langley@whidbey.com Summer is just around the corner, and we would love to include you in our promotional efforts for Langley Lights the Night ASAP!

First Saturday Art Walk June 1
Artworks Gallery hopes to be open for the First Saturday Art Walk in June. Work on the gallery is nearing completion! We will reopen in early June but our Grand Reopening Celebration will be on the day of the Langley Art Walk, July 6. We’ll be celebrating from 11 a.m.to 4 p.m. with beautiful new art, refreshments and gift basket drawings.
June’s featured artists are Gaylen Whiteman and Reggie Kastler. Gaylen Whiteman is a multi-talented visual artist and a long-time resident of Whidbey Island. Through her art, she reveals her inner relationship with the forces of nature that shape our world.
Basketry has been Reggie Kastler’s life since she started weaving in 1988. Besides the standard favorites, she creates custom pieces for clients and says, “Designing a basket for a particular use or as an art piece is the most fun. Clients have asked me to create pieces that solve a problem, commemorate a family event, or enhance a particular space.”
June brings two Whidbey Island female artists to Museo who explore expression through both painting and clay: Bergen Rose and Evelyn Woods. Delight in the juxtaposition between Evelyn’s realistic, detailed paintings and clay sculptures and Bergen’s abstract landscapes and ceramic pieces.
Jewelry maker Rebecca Bashara will be popping in with her new collection during the June Art Walk! Her jewelry style springs from the deep appreciation of natural forms and surfaces, melding naturalism and contemporary design in unique pieces.
Later in the month you can join us for a special Artist Talk Sundays with Michael on June 23, 2-4 p.m. Michael will sit down for a casual chat with Bergen and Evelyn to discuss their new paintings and sculptures. Light refreshments and lots of laughs provided, as always! RSVP on Facebook.
In June, Rob Schouten Gallery & Sculpture Garden presents oil paintings by Kathleen Frugé Brown and turned wood creations from
Don Wodjenski.
Kathleen Frugé Brown’s oil paintings portray the wildness of rivers and forests of the Pacific Northwest. Many of her paintings are done plein-air, some are finished in the studio. “One of the things about painting in the woods is the layers of things to see. The spatial complexity makes me look deeply and work vigorously to capture what I can before the light changes.” (above: Chuckanut Ridge – oil on canvas by Kathleen Frugé Brown – 40”h x 30”w)
Don Wodjenski is a woodturner who uses a variety of local and ethically sourced exotic woods to create bowls, platters and vases that often incorporate inlays of turquoise, malachite, lapis or gold, in a manner akin to the Japanese kintsugi tradition of fixing flaws and cracks in ceramics. Charring and burn piercings also add decorative elements.
Whidbey Art Gallery is bustling with new activity as our featured and guest artists get ready to show you their new work in June. One of our featured artists, Lynda Ransley will be showing spectacular new alcohol ink pieces. Her work is dramatic and compelling. Our metal workers, Jandellyn and Johnathan Ward are putting together some new works that will be an upgrade to your garden or patio.
Guest artist Becky Fields returns with her lovely, soft watercolor bird paintings. She says ‘I’ve been painting watercolors for about 17 years. Since moving to Whidbey three years ago, I’ve become an avid birder. So now I combine the things I most enjoy, birding, and painting. Birding and painting allow me to just enjoy the moment.’
Thursday Music Night at Dancing Fish: Ranger and “The Re-Arrangers” May 30, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Romani campsite with their version of Hot Club Swing. At the heart of their sound is Ranger’s sweet violin playing–his sense of melody and daring improvisations. The band’s repertoire includes swing standards, traditional European melodies, and the music of Django Reinhardt.
This event is by reservation only and a portion of the $25 admission fee will go to Whidbey Island Nourishes (WIN). Your reservation includes a shared, light appetizer board served to your table.
MAKE RESERVATIONS! https://dancingfishvineyards.orderport.net/wines/Events
Please be aware that due to limited seating capacity in the Dancing Fish Barn, some patrons may be assigned to larger communal tables. Leave Your Fears Here
New Works @ WICA June 13-16
In this intensely personal one-man play, actor James Morrison recounts his beloved son’s struggle with and ultimate recovery from brain cancer. It is a tale of losing a language and learning a new one, of a child teaching the parent, and the power of hope in the darkest of times. James takes you on a journey that affirms love and human connection as the antidote to fear and despair.

Swing State – Staged Reading @ WICA
June 20-23
Opening with post-play discussion featuring playwright Rebecca Gilman
This new American play is just off Broadway and onto our stage in a professional stage reading directed by Vito Zingarelli. In ‘Swing State,’ Rebecca Gilman looks for hope to outweigh despair in this contemporary portrait of America’s heartland in a time when it feels like everyone’s way of life is in danger of disappearing.
Recently widowed, Peg tends to the 40 acres of native prairie that rises behind her rural Wisconsin home. Her solitary days are interrupted only by visits from Ryan, a family friend with a checkered past. When her late husband’s footlocker is ransacked in her barn, she places a call to the local authorities—unwittingly setting off a series of events that will forever change their lives. As Peg and Ryan fight to regain each other’s trust, they learn how to help one another in a new and meaningful way and how to forge a sense of hope in a time when it feels like everyone’s way of life is in danger of disappearing.

This summer, gardeners from beginner to advanced from across Whidbey Island and beyond will be able to attend a series of six free classes designed to help implement best practices in the garden. The Island County WSU Master Gardener Education Series classes are open to the public and cover everything from dealing with pests to growing great vegetables. The series is presented by the Island County WSU Master Gardeners.
The series highlights how climate change and new knowledge about the impact of human behavior on nature inform and influence best garden practices. The way we garden has a big impact on our Island ecosystems. Gardeners can make a direct difference in caring for the environment in their own back yards because what is done there can affect wildlife, biodiversity, water use and human health.
Classes will be offered on the third Sunday of the month from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. May through September, and will take place at the Greenbank Education Garden, located at Greenbank Farm on Whidbey Island.
