2023 Christmas by the Sea Shopping Guide
Langley and Coupeville collaborated to produce a 28-page shopping guide, which includes local eateries, entertainment venues, and lodgings. This guide will be distributed to local hotels, in all island visitor centers and at local events. To those that advertised in the guide, a big THANK YOU!

First Saturday Art Walk
Our Langley galleries open their December shows at the First Saturday Art Walk, December 2, 5-7 pm.
Artworks Gallery:will be holding a Holiday Open House on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1 and 2, 5 – 7 pm. featuring small treasures that are perfect for holiday giving. We will be having holiday refreshments and artist demonstrations. Everyone is invited.

Gertrude Stein and a Companion through December 3 @ Outcast Theater
A Staged Reading directed by Patricia Duff with Martha Murphy and Duff in the roles.
OutCast is pleased to welcome this gem of a play back to the Black Box stage. “Gertrude Stein and A Companion” was previously produced in OCP’s first full season in 2012. This staged reading will feature the original cast.
The play begins just after the death of Gertrude Stein. Her ghost returns to reveal her relationship with Alice B. Toklas and traces the extraordinary relationship between Stein, experimental author and collector of art and artists, and her lifelong friend, who remained devoted to her memory and the life they shared. It moves back and forth in time as the actors play not only Gertrude and Alice but a host of famous people who were part of their lives, including Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso. But without Alice, her true love, Gertrude would have remained undiscovered.

On a very special Christmas eve, a young reindeer – laughed at for his looks and unsure of whether he’ll ever fit in – runs away from home desperate to find a place where he’ll be accepted for who he is. Like in any good adventure, Rudolph meets and is accompanied by another misfit, Hermey the hopeful dentist. Together they encounter fearful frights and moments of revelation. Eventually their journey brings them back home, where they discover that not only were they missed but are, indeed, needed – quirks and all – to save the day.

The Blue Danube Series:The Waters Project @ Outcast Theater

The Blue Danube Series: The Waters is a unique interdisciplinary art collaboration that is the brainchild of Alexandra Steiner to create awareness about the importance of water in our lives. The project brings together the talents of two accomplished artists, Brooke Lizotte, an American composer and musician, and Alexandra Steiner, an Evolution and Environment Biologist, and Artist from Austria. The project combines Steiner’s stunning water paintings with Lizotte’s beautiful musical compositions to create a powerful audio-visual experience that explores the different phases of water and the impact of human intervention on our world’s water resources.
The Blue Danube Series: The Waters is not just a passive art installation. It is an immersive audiovisual experience that invites the audience to explore the different facets of water. The performance takes the audience on a journey through the different phases of water, from mist to ice to the power of tidal waves, and ends with the fury of wildfires. The paintings and music work together to create a meditative environment that allows the audience to fully immerse themselves in the nature of water.

Each child will receive Good Cheer $Snowflake Bucks$ (approximately $20 value) that they can use to purchase gifts. In order to keep their holiday gifts a secret, parents and guardians wait in a separate area, sipping on hot chocolate and snacking on cookies. Before they leave, the kids get help wrapping their presents so they’re ready for holiday gifting.
We are looking for people to help make this experience possible. Volunteers are needed to welcome families, escort parents/guardians to their waiting area, help younger children shop, and wrap gifts. Past volunteers have described it as magical to see how much love children put in to selecting their gifts. To sign up to volunteer, email cathy@goodcheer.org. If you would like to sponsor some $Snowflake Bucks$, donations can be made at either store, online, or by check mailed to Good Cheer, PO Box 144, Langley 98260. We also need supplies like wrapping paper, gift bags and tissue paper, tape, gift tags, ribbon, gift boxes, and children’s toys. If you have extras to share, please bring these items to the Donation Center at 2812 Grimm Road in Langley before November 25. The Donation Center is open 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday each week.
New Free Resource for Seniors and Caregivers
Island Senior Resources has added a new free resource for seniors and caregivers — Downloadable Activity Books — available on our website at https://senior-resources.org/activity-hub/.
There will be about 15 new books each month filled with mental engagement activities (puzzles, games, coloring, mazes, and more) in easy and challenging versions and a monthly guide for Caregivers on using the books with those they care for. Users can print full books or just a few pages at a time when they want them.
