In June Artworks Gallery offers the work of painter Nancy Frances, who works primarily in non-objective abstracts and enjoys creating movement and energy in her art with bold design, marks, and convincing value contrast. Artworks also welcomes Regina Kastler, owner of Basket Works N.W. who has created over 18,500 beautiful and functional hand-dyed and woven baskets since 1988. Artworks Gallery is in the courtyard off 2nd Street – next to Ultra House – at 221 2nd Street, Langley. Hours are 11-5 Wednesday through Monday and 11-7 on the first Saturday of each month.
Museo showcases three distinctive women artists whose work defines strength in different ways. Laura Hamje presents us with paintings that are strong, beautiful, and encompassing as shown by her bold use of color and light. Laura Viola Preciado’s new paintings explore the boundaries of beauty, strength, gracefulness and tension. Forged from metal and found objects, Sara Owen’s work is figuratively and (quite) literally a depiction of strength. From her delicate jewelry made up of rigid forms, to the sensually sculpted candelabras and organically shaped functional pieces for the home, Sara’s art contains multitudes – existing in the powerful spaces in-between.This month we are delighted to introduce to the gallery the bright animal paintings of local artist Laura Hudson (Heggenes Hens, above) and the bold ceramics of Peter Gross. Museo, 215 First Street, Langley. Museo is open Wednesday through Sunday 11-5, Monday 11-3 and closed Tuesdays (or by chance).
Rob Schouten Gallery presents Brian Mahieu’s
paintings of the North Olympic Coast and Hoh Rainforest. Working in bold, assertive strokes and intense color, Brian views his paintings as the esthetic records of a moment in time and place.
The exhibition consists of eleven vibrant new studio paintings and a number of plein-air works. To see more of Brian’s exhibition: https://www.robschoutengallery.com/brian-mahieu Rob Schouten Gallery, 101 Anthes Avenue, Langley Summer Hours: Weekends 10 – 5, Weekdays 11 – 5.

The Lady Washington is Calling You to the Sea at South Whidbey Harbor in Langley June 7-18
Close your eyes. Feel the Pacific Ocean breeze soothing your skin. Bask in the light mist of the waves as they rhythmically rise and fall. Hear the seagulls beckon to each other overhead. Open your eyes and see the magnificent sunrise on the endless horizon. Look around — you’re aboard the majestic Lady Washington.
A trip on the historical sailing ship Lady Washington is a trip like no other and one you get to define.
For families, history enthusiasts and those interested in shorter trips, we offer an “Adventure on the High Seas.” You’ll travel back in time and sail as they did on the original Lady Washington in the 1700s and 1800s. You’ll even haul lines, set sails and sing sea shanties while learning about American maritime exploration throughout the years.
Perhaps you’re approaching a special anniversary or milestone or just want to create a blissful new memory with friends. Make it a celebration for the ages with a “Sunset to Remember” cruise. We’ll drift through charming West Coast towns as you and your significant other or treasured friends and family have a relaxing and sensational time out at sea. You can even book live music aboard to create a soundtrack for the evening. Mother Nature will dazzle as the sunset paints the sky and marks an unforgettable experience for you and your loved ones.
For the truly adventurous types, we also occasionally offer one-way transit to another port. Depending on the port, you could be out at sea for a few hours or a few days. However long the journey, you’re ready to seize the adventure, and you’ll have an up-close experience of how the ship is manned. If you so choose, you can even help steer the ship or take part in other duties. All meals are included in this trip category.
Rob Verchick: The Octopus in the Parking Garage @ WICA June 9, 7 pm.
Join us at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts for a lecture
and book release from climate law scholar, Rob Verchick.
on Friday, June 9 @ 7:30 p.m.
In his book, The Octopus in the Parking Garage, Rob takes the reader on a journey into the field: paddling through Louisiana’s bayous, hiking in one of the last refuges of Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert, and diving off Key Largo with citizen scientists working to restore coral reefs. The book emphasizes disadvantaged communities, which bear the brunt of environmental risk, arguing that building climate resilience is a necessary step toward justice. Engaging and accessible for nonexpert concerned citizens, The Octopus in the Parking Garage empowers readers to face the climate crisis and shows what we can do to adapt and thrive.
Rob Verchick is a leading climate law scholar who designed and implemented climate-resilience policies in the Obama administration. He holds the Gauthier-St. Martin Chair in Environmental Law at Loyola University New Orleans, is a senior fellow in disaster resilience at Tulane University, and serves as president of the Center for Progressive Reform. Verchick is the author of four books and host of the podcast Connect the Dots.

Whidbey’s Water Future in a Changing Climate Saturday, June 10, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
@ Whidbey Island Center for the Arts
Water is Life – When you have it you don’t think about it,
when you don’t it’s ALL you think about!
The Whidbey Island Center for the Arts and the Langley Climate Crisis Action Committee are collaborating with scientists and WATER experts to bring you the Whidbey Water Story in an all-day event. Featured speakers include Dr. Richard Gammon, Dr. Paul Belanger, Penny Livingston, John Lovie, Brian Kerkvliet, Jake Stewart and more.
Climate change is already making its effects felt on Whidbey Island with changing weather patterns, hotter summers, rising sea levels, summer smoke and threat of wildfire. It’s easy to overlook how these challenges will affect our fresh water supply, but the hard truth is that our only source of water is rainfall. In coming years maintaining an abundance of fresh water on Whidbey will require vigilance and concerted effort, but there are many avenues for bolstering our water cycle, protecting our aquifer system, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Speakers will frame our challenge; workshops will provide us ideas/actions we residents can take to help ensure our precious water supply stays healthy.
This is an all-day conference, so bring a SACK LUNCH!
There will not be time to go into Langley to grab lunch as this is a Summer Saturday, and Langley will be filled with tourists! We will have cold beverages available.
Tickets available at www.WICAonline.org or at the WICA box office. $20 for the whole day!

August 10 – PETE is the quintessential Whidbey Island garage band, performing rock & blues dance music and American groove music. The band is comprised of Goosefoot’s own Fredde Butterworth on drums, Dave Draper and Tom Hoeflich on guitar, Marc Strader on bass, with special guests David Licastro on guitar and Danny Ward on sax.

QR Codes for Historic Buildings?
The Langley Historic Preservation commission and Langley Main Street Association would like to place a QR code on buildings that would allow the viewer to learn about the history of that building.
The historic information would come from the Historic Preservation Commission’s website: langleyhistrory.com that is continually updated. This project involves no cost to the owner of the building, and placement of the QR code on the building would be approved by the building owner.
If you would like to have such a QR code on your business, or have questions, please contact: Bob Waterman bobanne@whidbey.com
