First Saturday Art Walk May 6, 5-7 p.m.

  • Artworks Gallery highlights glass artist Morgan Bell in May. Morgan has been kiln-forming glass for over 30 years. Her work encompasses fine art, home decor, jewelry and gift items. Currently Morgan is creating a series of sculptures inspired by the poetry of Rumi, a 13th Century Persian poet, scholar, theologian and mystic whose heartfelt writings have been treasured globally for nearly 800 years. His themes of love and devotion are timeless. Morgan features two sculptures in her Rumi series. Also on display are Morgan’s decorative lamps. Called “Crystal Fusion,” the lamps are created by cold fusing broken tempered glass windows. The natural color of the broken glass ranges from pale green to golden yellow to turquoise. Summer hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Monday (closed Tuesdays)
  • For May at Museo we are full of old friends, introductions, and a special appearance! Our May show brings us three different artists who capture the natural world with distinctive points of view: Iskra Johnson, CA Pierce and Danielle Bodine. Also, we are pleased to introduce watercolor landscapes of Whidbey Island by David Van Galen, and painterly ceramics of Christine Westergarrd. And finally, a trunk show by beloved jewelry artist Rebecca Bashara during the opening reception for Langley’s Art Walk, Saturday May 6th, 5-7 p.m..
  • Rob Schouten Gallery presents their 15th Anniversary Exhibition May 3 – 29 celebratng fifteen wonderful years of showing the exceptional artwork of Whidbey Island and Northwest artists.(And it is our sixth year at our much loved Langley location.) We offer our most heartfelt thanks to our community, clients and artists! The exhibition features new work from many of our artists, including painters Alfredo Arreguan, Anne Belov, Francy Blumhagen, Cary Loopuyt Jurriaans, Susan R. Lytle, Teresa Saia, gallery founder Rob Schouten, and many more. We also have new sculptures by bronze artists Georgia Gerber, and Sharon Spencer, as well as sculptures by Dan Freeman, glass by Dan & Joi LaChausse, Richard LaLonde, ceramics by Joan Govedare, woodwork by Don Wodjenski, Bruce Launer, and Gary Leake. • Whidbey Art Gallery’s talented artists are hoping that all our April showers will bring May flowers. The gallery is filled with colorful new work and is the place to pick up something for Mother’s Day. A framed floral painting or photograph stands the test of time, and there is much more to consider, from jewelry, ceramics and pottery to photography, calligraphy, yard art and beadwork. In May, our featured artists are photographer Holly Davison and metal artists Johnathan and Jandellyn Ward. Holly’s photographs are spectacular in color and composition. The Wards’ Winfield Designs are known for their metal garden art. Whidbey Art Gallery welcomes Lynda Ransley as our guest artist in May. Her work is vibrant, colorful, and energetic.

Timely Twain by Jim Carroll @ Outcast Theater

David Ossman directs Timely Twain, written by and featuring Jim Carroll at Outcast Theater
Twain is arguably our most famous American author and humorist. He was also an important and influential social icon. Timely Twain opens with the witty storyteller using his podium to deliver his wry political and social commentary. Finally, the numerous tragedies in his personal life appear to lead him to a darker, disappointed cynicism.
Samuel Clemens followed every personal tragedy with surges of creative energy and productivity. There’s no doubt he would have done so again but for an appointment with Halley’s Comet in 1910. With faith in Clemens’s indomitable nature, the playwright gives Captain Stormfield, Twain’s posthumous alter ego, the last word.

Whidbey Island Grown Partners with Port and Fairgrounds

The Whidbey Island Fairgrounds & Events Center and The Port of South Whidbey are happy and proud to announce the addition of the Whidbey Island Grown Cooperative to the Fairground’s Malone Building, where they will operate their Food Hub program.

The WIGC Food Hub is an online marketplace where over 40 local and regional producers sell their products to Whidbey Island households, restaurants, markets, and schools. The Malone building will be used to aggregate and store the local products, then pack and distribute customer orders.
The Food Hub connects the community with local farms and supports local, small-scale food producers with services like cold storage and shared supply orders. The space they will be occupying on the fairgrounds will allow them to grow for years while supporting other local businesses such as the Fairgrounds kitchen renters.

“Moving our headquarters to the Malone Building space is going to allow us to grow and expand our Food Hub and farmer services. We look forward to this partnership and the opportunities that it brings,” said Shannon Bly, Executive Director of WIGC.
