Coughenour\, former chief judge of the Western District of Washington\, continues to hear cases in a number of courts including Guam\, while on senior status. He was appointed to the District Court bench in 1981 by President Reagan. Born in Pittsburgh Kansas\, he received his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and in 1966 came to Seattle to practice law\, as well as to teach at the University of Washington School of law until his appointment to the bench. He has heard cases continuously for over 45 years! A noted and frequent speaker about the importance of preserving an independent judiciary\, Judge Coughenour will be interviewed on WICA’s stage by Bob Merry. Their conversation will discuss the Rule of Law and why the continued independence of the judiciary is crucial to our democracy.
