SUMMARY:Island Shakespeare - The Lucky Chance
DESCRIPTION:July 19 – September 8\, 2024\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSummer 2024 includes Aphra Behn’s\, The Lucky Chance\, directed by Julie Beckman. Julie makes her return to ISF having adapted and directed 2016’s audience favorite Jane Eyre. With at least eighteen plays to her name\, Aphra Behn was England’s first professional female playwright. Almost all of her works were produced during her lifetime\, while two premiered posthumously. In this iconic Restoration comedy\, arranged marriages are the subject for despair. Two witty young ladies\, Leticia and Julia\, find themselves arranged to older out-of-touch gentlemen\, Sir Feeble Fainwou’d and Sir Cautious Fulbank. Each woman devises plots to end their marriages and do receive their wish after the men admit they were too old to marry. Leticia is successfully reunited with her lover\, Belmour. Unfortunately for Julia\, Sir Cautious Fulbank must pass on before she can be free of his marriage bed. The play was extremely popular and one of Aphra Behn’s triumphs at putting women center stage. \nThis play was one of Aphra Behn’s last comedies before she passed. It is a condemnation of arranged marriage and older senile men forcing themselves on young ladies. The play held the stage for more than a decade and enjoyed a successful revival in 1718\, showing how its themes continued to resonate with audiences. At a time when female actresses were allowed to take the stage\, Aphra Behn was famous for capturing the woes of Restoration women in unwanted arrangements; a conflict normally ignored by her male counterparts. The play has been produced recently in updated versions.

SUMMARY:WSU Master Gardener Education Series - Go Green in the Garden
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, gardeners from beginner to advanced from across Whidbey Island and beyond will be able to attend a series of six free classes designed to help implement best practices in the garden. The Island County WSU Master Gardener Education Series classes are open to the public and cover everything from dealing with pests to growing great vegetables. The series is presented by the Island County WSU Master Gardeners. \nThe series highlights how climate change and new knowledge about the impact of human behavior on nature inform and influence best garden practices.  The way we garden has a big impact on our Island ecosystems.  Gardeners can make a direct difference in caring for the environment in their own back yards because what is done there can affect wildlife\, biodiversity\, water use and human health. \nClasses are offered on the third Sunday of the month from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. May through September\, and will take place at the Greenbank Education Garden\, located at Greenbank Farm on Whidbey Island. \n•    June 16 Firewise Gardening – Landscaping for Fire Resistance\n•    July 21 Good Lawn/Bad Lawn\n•    August 18 Winter Veggies Growing Guide/Island Stalwarts\n•    September 15 Go Green in the Garden: Using Nature’s Own Plant Food
