SUMMARY:Intro to Seaweed Foraging
DESCRIPTION:Learn which seaweeds you can harvest and how with Jeanie McElwain of Sound Water Stewards. Jeanie will introduce attendees to Whidbey’s best edible seaweeds at the largest kelp forest in Washington State\, right off of central Whidbey! \nDress for the weather\, including close-toed sturdy shoes—waterproof are best but not necessary. Since this is an introductory class attendees won’t be harvesting seaweed themselves\, instead\, Jeanie will supply information on how to obtain a seaweed collection license and on further resources for seaweed identification and harvesting. \nJeanie McElwain has been a BeachWatcher and Sound Water Steward since 2003. She has led numerous programs for Sno-Isle Libraries\, Sound Water Stewards and other organizations on Whidbey Island. Learn more about Sound Water Stewards and the amazing work SWS does to protect and preserve the coastal ecosystems of the Salish Sea through education\, science and stewardship at their website: www.soundwaterstewards.org \nThis free outdoor program is part of Sno-Isle Libraries’ summer-long Library Walks series. Visit a new Whidbey Island location each month this summer to learn about Whidbey’s local gems and complementary library resources. \nHosted by the Coupeville Library.
