Chocolate Flower Farm
We moved to our 1923 farm just outside of the seaside village of Langley on Whidbey Island in 2005 and opened Chocolate Flower Farm. We began as a specialty plant nursery offering selections from our extensive collection of “chocolate” (dark colored) plants and rare perennials.
It started as a specialty plant nursery on eight acres just outside the village of Langley with the specialty being dark maroon colored flowers and plants, which is how Chocolate Flower Farm got its name. It was also a mail order plant nursery and with the website and the name it was immediately discovered by the media starting with The San Diego Union Tribune who proclaimed that Chocolate Gardens was the hottest new gardening trend.
The media was very kind to us and Martha Stewart Magazine bought a very large number of plants that we shipped to her upstate NY home to be used for a feature in their October 2006 magazine called “Dark Plants for the Fall Garden.” Then a few years later they came and spent a couple days photographing and featured the gardens in their October 2014 issue.
The funniest article was in the Moscow, Russia publication “Seasons” which featured my Chocolate Vanilla Swirl Garden in their chocolate issue.
In addition to the chocolate colored plants I began making chocolate themed products and I call my store in Langley my “farm stand” since it features the products that I make at the farm. I make Raspberry & Chocolate Jam, Hot Chocolate (spicy) Raspberry Jam, Candles, Cocoa Butter based natural body products, fudge and seed kits and seed packets from my rare and sought after dark colored plants. I wholesale my product line to stores throughout the US and a few in Canada. I have over 150 stores that purchase my products. I no longer do mail order plants but the farm is open to the public in the summer for touring the gardens and purchasing plants and our farm-made products. The farm will open in June this season. The shop in Langley is open year round.
